Volunteer Coordinator

Position Purpose

Interfaith Action’s vision is that opportunity grows, and poverty recedes when people of faith invest themselves in effective action.  Much of Interfaith Action’s work to accomplish that vision happens because of thousands of volunteers from Houses of Worship (HOWs) in our community.  The Volunteer Coordinator is a key position at Interfaith Action.  The volunteer coordinator is the point-person for Interfaith Action’s (IFA’s) corps of volunteers in all programs. The Volunteer Coordinator has primary responsibility for recruiting, engaging, and supporting individual volunteers and volunteer groups, particularly from area houses of worship, with the express purpose of meeting the volunteering goals of all IFA programs.

Position Functions/Relationships

This person collaborates closely with and reports directly to the Director of Faithful Hospitality program, and supports volunteer effectiveness for Faithful Hospitality.


  • Understand the mission of IFA programs and communicate effectively to volunteers about the programs.
  • Develop and manage recruitment, intake and tracking processes, orientation/training materials, and accurate call and email lists for volunteers across programs
  • Develop and support events, engagement strategies, educational opportunities, and other ways to increase effectiveness of volunteers
  • Enter, update, and maintain accurate data for volunteers, houses of worship, and programs in SalesForce.
  • In collaboration with IFA staff, send out periodic calls-to-action to aggregated and disaggregated groups of volunteers.
  • In collaboration with Director of Faithful Hospitality, participate in or lead speaking engagements at houses of worship (evening and weekend hours may apply).
  • Be a positive, connected part of the staff at Interfaith Action, and keep connected to community stakeholders in the greater St. Paul area.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality with volunteers.
  • Work closely with Director of Faithful Hospitality to manage volunteers as needed/available.
  • Support IFA-wide and program-specific events as needed/requested.
  • Suggest new/modified events to increase engagement, commitment, and/or numbers of volunteers.
  • Prepare reports from SalesForce as requested/needed.
  • Prepare for and attend all required staff and program meetings as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience working with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) persons and communities.
  • Exceptional “customer service” experience, including event planning and coordination.
  • Possess an acceptance of and respect for cultural and faith diversity. Ability to work with and relate to people in a multi-cultural educational environment.
  • Be comfortable engaging in faith-based dialogue, and leading conversations/presentations in faith-based community spaces.  Experience in the inner-workings of a house of worship (HOW) with an understanding of HOWs’ workflow, administrative pressures, institutional needs, and more is a plus.
  • Proven database entry, report generation, and modification skills.
  • Must be a team player, demonstrate good listening and empathetic skills, as well as excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be honest, dependable, and professional at all times; experience maintaining personal/professional boundaries.
  • Must exercise patience, understanding, creativity, and fairness with participants and volunteers; manage personal stress constructively.
  • Personal commitment to the mission of Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is normally performed in an office work environment but includes sitting, repetitive motions (keyboard), carrying of files, and bending to access files.
  • Regular operation of normal office machines (computer, copier, and phone system) is required.
  • Accurate record keeping is required.
